“Do you have to make me feel like there’s nothing left of me? You can take everything I have, you can break everything I am, like I’m made of glass, like I’m made of paper. Go on and try to tear me down — I will be rising from the ground like a skyscraper.”—Demi Lovato, Skyscraper
I know you can eat dinner. I know you can do it. You are not huge, the worst, or awful. You are recovering because you need to be healthy and alive. I know you can do this! I have faith in you to do so. *hugs*
So I get a lot of asks about how to stay motivated during recovery, especially when you feel like you’re slipping. Now there are some more specific things you can do depending on what you are recovering from exactly and what your tendencies are but here’s a general list you might find useful.
Remember WHY you’re recovering.
Remember WHAT you’re gaining in/after recovery.
Don’t be afraid to tell someone you’re struggling, allow yourself to get a little extra support.
If you’re in a group- don’t skip!! If you aren’t in a group- look for a free support group in your area (ANAD groups are great).
Be gentle with yourself. Don’t get angry because you slipped up. Remember that you’re human and this is all a part of recovery.
Do nice things for yourself and practice good self care. Do things that make you happy. Buy a book to read, take a bubble bath, get your nails done, ect.
BREATHE. Remember you are going to be okay <3 <3
Really try to focus on your goals. Don’t take on too much extra stuff- you’re recovery is your number one priority.
If you have a treatment team be honest with them and let them know you are struggling- they’re there for you.
Post affirmations EVERYWHERE. In the kitchen, on the mirrors, in the shower, in your closet, on the door, by your bed, in your sock drawer… EVERYWHERE. I literally surround myself with so much positivity it used to make me nauseous.
To-do this week: print out affirmations to post all over the apartment. (Sorry, roomies!)
